The Vertica Tips Biennial Review

The Vertica Tips blog has been live since March 1, 2014. Since then, a lot has happened. Let’s review!

Below we’ll analyze the period of March 1, 2014 through March 31, 2016. Across all three metrics, the initial “bump” for the blog came after the 2014 Big Data Conference. That is, a lot of content from the conference was featured on the blog which helped drive traffic. After January 2015, only a few posts were published until April 2015, when our April Fool’s post created some interesting feedback and bumped us up again (someone actually thought Vertica was removing delete/update functionality).

The rest is history, or really organic growth. Let’s drill into the numbers.

Page Views

The blog reached a peak of 8,845 page views at the end of March 2016 with a total of 104,783 page views for the entire period. The most popular post was Under the Hood: System Tables and Views with 4,395 page views (4.19%), and Table Size behind it with 2,536 page views (2.42%).

Just shy of 5,000, March 2016 had 4,964 unique sessions. Overall there were 53,864 sessions during the period. The United States represented 23,826 (44.23%) of all sessions with India in second at 6,693 (12.43%). The major operating system was Windows making up 64.27% of the sessions, and 22.26% using Mac.

At the end of the period, we reached 2,878 users for March 2016 and 26,210 users overall. Of these users, 51.3% were returning visitors and 48.7% were new to the blog. Chrome was the most popular browser making up 67.31% of all sessions and Firefox in second with 16.53%.

We Need Authors

Having moved to a new position and new technology, the amount of time required to maintain and post new content is no longer there for me. Having new authors and content is important to continue bringing value to the Vertica community. If you are interested in writing for the blog, please let us know.
